Media ReleasesDon’t Forget Eggs - To Help Boost Your Memory
A recent discovery by the global Life Sciences and Material Sciences Company, DSM, has concluded that certain proteins present in egg whites boost specific brain functions, including the memory. REF: (1)(2)(3)(4).
It’s no secret that proteins in the diet can affect brain performance because they provide the amino acids from which neurotransmitters are made. The two most important amino acids, Tryptophan and Tyrosine, are used in the brain as building blocks for signaling molecules that play an important role in processes such as mood, sleep, stress, concentration, alertness and cognition.
Based on the fact that Tryptophan and Tyrosine are so important for brain health, DSM investigated which protein source would be the best source of these amino acids. They discovered that a protein present in egg white has the most favourable composition to feed the brain. DSM is currently investigating whether this protein can be developed into a functional food ingredient, improving brain health.
While still undergoing its last phase of product development, the ingredient has been tested in human studies and seems to have a positive effect on mood, hand-eye coordination, vigilance, and sleep. Studies to test the effect on memory are currently ongoing.
